According to the unilever site, Omo and 'Omo front loader small and mighty' don't contain phosphates.

Is that a recent change, implemented sometime after your blog. Shame about the optical brighteners though.

All the re-usable bags are so well presented and designed now too that they make fantastic gift ideas. There should be no excuse really for people not to use them for their big grocery shops. I just came back from Adelaide where the supermarkets don't even have plastic bags at the check outs and it was fantastic to see all walks of life - from your grannys to the builders to the teenagers - all using they're own re-usable bags. Good for you Adelaide.

Thanks for this recommendation Kirsten - what a wonderful example Greenhouse is setting of how things can be done differently - and kinder to our environment. I'm off there for lunch tomorrow now - yay!

Wow - what an interesting experience. I'm guessing the 'branding' experts have advised the trusty shop assistants to pedal the glossy bag big time! Along with the Onyas and Envirosax, there are also the Envirotrend and our personal faves the Stuffits. All depends if you want to roll, fold or stuff your handy little reusable bag into your handbag till its next use! There is a also a fab mockumentary on the life cycle of a plastic bag going round - google it.

Op shops or advertised "second hand" stores can be a real bargain, even out of Perth city. I was in Denmark (Southwest, WA) recently, and in the centre of town is a second hand clothes store (with more women's clothing than men's). I managed to pick up some jeans & two logo emblazened t-shirts for an average of $8 each item. The wear-and-tear on the clothes was undetectable.

Interesting discovering of a worrying concept! I always thought shops bagged items when they were getting a bit 'old' and wanted to move the stock (with cheaper price and bulk amount).

Perhaps, it's simply for moving stock... with people being 'busy', maybe their research shows that people like to simply grab a bag for the trolley and keep moving (i.e not playing with individual fruit/veg). So, quick shopping, means easy sales.

To add to your rant... doesn't that just mean they're encouraging 'wasting' food (as well as bad packaging) as they're making bulk purchase easier and cheaper, and customers may end up throwing out more wasted food?
